Presentation Summary Most Project Management training and testing programs typically focus more on the methodologies of project management and usually utilize a binary scale to indicate whether one does or doesn’t meet a predetermined qualification criteria of a professionalism standard. This paper will provide a scaled structure for assessing, monitoring and building individual project management competencies across several PM methodologies, as well as account for the soft skills needed to succeed in this profession. Presentation Abstract Organizations grow by projects; hence building individual project management maturity has become imperative to the success of organizations. However, today’s project management certifications (CAPM®, PMP®, Prince2®, CSM®, IPM®, Lean®) certify professionals with a focus towards individual methodologies and usually utilize a binary scale to indicate whether one does or doesn’t meet a predetermined standard. Further these criteria don’t provide a way to make assessments along the art of project management - PM soft skills – that are necessary to succeed in this profession. Thus our current standards for competency measurement are somewhat constrained and do not provide a true roadmap for individual growth. This presentation will first of all articulate this issue in detail by providing several practical examples from real world. Then we will discuss the science behind each methodology and at the same time explain the threads of the project management art in each of them. The presentation will then discuss the idea of competency pillars, competency levels and assessment criteria to provide a scaled structure for assessing, monitoring and building individual project management competencies across several methodologies, as well as the soft skills needed to succeed in this profession. The presentation will then discuss how individual measures could be used to assess, and grow organizational project management maturity. Audience Level General |
